Leib grenadiers saxon

W J Rawkins 2016

With the re-organisation of 1810 the Leib-Grenadier-Garde remained at a two
battalion strength but each battalion was reduced to four companies, the two
Flügelkompagnien being absorbed into the battalions as the 4th and 8th companies.
The internal organisation remained virtually unchanged except that the company
structure was brought into line with that of the line infantry.
Kompagnie Establishment 1810-1814
1 Kapitän I.Klasse or Kapitän II.Klasse 1 Leutnant I.Klasse
1 Leutnant II.Klasse 1 Fähnrich
1 Kompagnie-Feldscher 1 Feldwebel
2 Sergent 1 Sergent-Quartiermeister
10 Korporal (7 from 1814) 4 Gefreite (From 1814)
4 Trommler 2 Zimmerleute
180 Grenadiere 1810-1812 - 140 Grenadiere 1812-1813 - 110 Grenadiere 1814
In 1813 the Leib-Grenadier-Regiment was only able to raise a single field
battalion of some 600 men and a depot battalion of two companies.
In an attempt to strengthen his links with his foreign allies, on 14 September
1813, Napoleon ordered that a new division of the Old Guard be formed to consist
of the two battalions of Velites from Florence and Turin, two battalions of the Saxon
Leib-Garde-Grenadiers, and one battalion of Polish Grenadiers. The articles of the
decree stated that the Saxon battalions, would consist of 800 men, aged 23 or over
and have served for at least 2 years; that the grenadiers would be given the same
status and pay of the 2eme Regiment des Grenadiers a Pied de la Garde Imperiale;
the cost of maintaining the Saxon contingent would remain with the King of Saxony.
On 24 October 1813, Napoleon ordered the existing Saxon Grenadier Battalion be
paraded in front of the Kings Palace at Leipsic, to be his bodyguard that day.
After the Battle of Leipsic and the defection of the Saxon army to the Allies,
Generalmajor von Zezchau with the 600 men of the Leib-Grenadier-Garde and a
handful of officers quickly left the field and took up station around the royal palace
at Leipsic as a body guard for König Friedrich August until taken into captivity with
their king by the allies after the battle was decided. Following Leipsic the army
was re-organised for service with the Prussian army and the Provisorisch-GardeRegiment was formed in three battalions from the existing soldiers of the LeibGrenadier-Garde and survivors of the Infanterie-Regimenten König and the former
grenadier battalions.
New Provisional Regiment Former Regiment New Battalion
Provisorisch-Garde-Regiment Leib-Grenadier-Garde 1.Bataillon
Infanterie-Regiment König 2.Bataillon
Infanterie Grenadier-Kompagnien 3.Bataillon
On paper the staff of the Provisional Guard regiment was unchanged but each
battalion had four companies each of 110 grenadiers.
